The EPITOME of What is Happening to People Nowadays : An ART RESPONSE
"Who are the zombies now?"
An illustration by Steve Cutts
Steve Cutts is a UK based illustrator and animator who has worked for various renowned agencies such as UNESCO, The Gaia Foundation, Isobar, LMFM and Analogfolk. Some of his works have also been seen in shows such as "The Simpsons" and music videos. His work has also been featured on various television networks such as Adult Swim and Fox in the US and Channel 4 in the UK.
The illustration shows zombies looking at their phone, which is quite accurate to one of the major problems happening today; which is the fact that social media is taking over daily life. Nowadays most people are now on the internet and social media due to the pandemic, which gave rise to old problems becoming more frequent such as cyberbullying, fake news, account hacking, scams and many others down the line. The fact that most people are more focused on their social media status than their well being is honestly quite frightening.
There was once a time where I had experienced one of the problems of being overly engrossed with my phone that what was happening around me, because of that I had a hard time talking to other people as a kid I had very few friends. But after graduating and going to high school I had to change myself and communicate with others and made lots of friends, but due to what's happening today it feels like I have gone back to when I was still a child but its different from back then I now have friends to talk to and have fun with.
The illustration to me perfectly illustrates what is happening right now, people have nowhere else to go to free themselves from boredom except for the internet; but in turn some may be too engrossed to it making them do nothing but look at their phones the whole day mindlessly staring at the screen as if it hypnotizes them. People nowadays see their phone as the only thing that can provide them with entertainment even though there are many things to do to substitute their time on the phone.
After seeing the the illustration it made me realize that people are resorting to the internet to deal with their problems whether that be boredom, depression, loneliness and many others. But they don't realize that staring mindlessly on a screen isn't gonna help them, they have the option to try new things like music, exercise, cooking, drawing, family bonding or any other thing that's not constantly staring at a screen. You shouldn't be afraid to try new things because if your constantly afraid then your LIFE will never move FORWARD.
